OUR "WHY": A JOURNEY TO CLARITY

At our core, we exist for one reason: to help our clients find clarity so they can live with confidence.

 

It’s a mission born from a story, and it’s the answer to a question I get all the time: "Why on earth did you walk away from a top job that was going so well, just to start over from scratch?"

The answer goes back more than 20 years, to my first taste of the financial services industry right out of grad school. The pitch was simple: I would help people grow their wealth. And because the firm was “independent,” we could offer clients a menu of products to choose from.

Most of the training was about sales. Reps from big mutual fund and insurance companies would visit, armed with colorful brochures and impressive charts. They’d show how rich you could have become by investing in their hand-picked, five-star funds. My job was to get clients to buy in. If I did, I’d be their hero and make a great living. I was hooked. It sounded like the ultimate win-win. But was it?

Over time, I started to notice things that didn’t quite add up. How could we call ourselves "independent" when we were just picking from a pre-selected menu? I started digging into the numbers, comparing the real returns my clients were getting. What I found was unsettling. The actively-managed funds we were pushing weren't actually making my clients money. In fact, after you subtracted the sky-high (and often hidden) fees and factored in inflation, they were losing ground. The only ones getting rich were the fund companies.

A bigger question kept nagging at me: If these "five-star" fund managers were so brilliant, why did their funds consistently fail to beat the overall market?

Right in the middle of this crisis of confidence, I was introduced to Mark Matson, and his approach turned my world upside down—in the best way possible. His platform completely rejected the old model of trying to outguess the market. Instead, it was built on the Nobel Prize-winning academic principles I had actually studied in grad school: the Efficient Market Hypothesis, Modern Portfolio Theory, and the Three-Factor Model. It just made sense. Even better, the fees were a fraction of what my clients were currently paying, and the net returns were significantly better.

Suddenly, my path was clear, but it wasn't easy. My clients were trusting me with their hard-earned money, but my hands were tied. As long as I worked for a company with high fees and a limited, underperforming menu, I couldn't truly act in their best interest. I knew I had to make a change.

The only way forward was to leave it all behind and start over, on my own, with almost nothing. It was a terrifying decision, and it came with some serious financial and personal consequences. But in my heart, I knew I couldn't continue down a path I no longer believed in. I have never once regretted that choice.
